ZAKYNTHOS RENOVATED VILLAGE HOUSE
MANY ATTRACTIVE FEATURES
Zakynthos renovated village house, which has been fully restored by the present owners in 2008. The property is in the centre of the village of Ano Gerakario on the Ionian island of Zakynthos. The renovation was done with loving care. Every traditional feature which could be retained, was retained. Where that was not possible, it was replaced with similar materials in the same style.
One of the main features of the house is that it provides complete privacy. The wrought iron entrance gate leads under a vine laden pergola to the front door and to the rear there is a substantial courtyard with stone patios shaded by three orange trees, a small planted area and the entrance to the kitchen and outbuildings, which help to ensure total privacy.
The house, built on a plot of 241 sq.m. provides 80 sq.m. of accommodation as follows;
Dining kitchen with many traditional features including open fireplace, stone floor, beamed ceiling, recessed shelving with wine rack and hand made cupboards, units and work surfaces.
Double bedroom with fitted wardrobes
In addition the house has the benefit of;
Garage and parking
External storage area housing central heating boiler and oil tank
Other works carried out during the renovations, included a new roof to the kitchen, electrical rewiring, new plumbing, new doors and windows and outside rendering.
One of the outbuildings which is used as a garage could easily be converted into a second double bedroom with en suite facilities. The estimated cost of this would be approximately 5,000 Euro
Ano Gerakario is a small unspoilt Greek village, lying 14 kilometres to the north of Zakynthos town and ten minutes from the small family holiday resort of Alykanas. It is a village of narrow winding lanes just wide enough for two donkeys to pass and is blissfully peaceful.
Ano Gerakario has a village shop, a restaurant and a kafeneion. Further shopping facilities, including a supermarket, a medical centre and a selection of tavernas are available in Alykanas. The beaches at Alykanas are sandy and shelve gently into the sea.
Alykanas has a small boat harbour where it is understood moorings are available and slightly further down the coast is a modern purpose built marina. The coast is dotted with small quiet bays approached through olive groves and vineyards.
Zakynthos is the most southerly of the Ionian Islands. Along the west coast and to the north of the island, there is spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. It is a paradise for those who enjoy water sports, as well as walking and cycling. There are a number of marinas for yachts and other pleasure craft.
Zakynthos town, has pedestrianised shopping streets and an attractive Venetian square lined with ice cream parlours, cafes and tavernas. The Church of St. Dionisis is the centre piece of the waterfront and in August people come from all over Greece to celebrate his birth.
From the port there is a regular ferry service to the mainland andAthens is a three hour drive, mostly on modern new motorways. An express coach service also goes to Athens several times a day, throughout the year
Zakynthos has its own airport with daily flights from Athens to Zakynthos throughout the year, the flight time being 45 minutes. In spring,summer and autumn, there are direct flights from most European countries.
