KARKINAGRI

Karkinagri is  a scenic fishing village, faced by the sea and backed by mountains. In summer the residents enjoy festivals with music and dancing. The village square becomes the setting for a fair. The Marina at Beachfront Holiday                   Home Ikaria

The village has two small mini markets, four tavernas, a number of cafes and one doctor. There is access by boat to the village but no bus service.  Car and bike rentals are available as is a taxi service. Immediately below the house there is both a sandy beach and a rocky beach. Other beaches are close by. This included the long sandy beach of Armenistis, which is only 30 minutes away.

IKARIA

With  an airport and two ports Ikaria is easily accessible. Even in winter it receives daily flights  from Athens and Thessaloniki. The flight time from Athens is 40 minutes. There is also a regular ferry service from Piraeus, the journey time being about seven hours.

Ikaria is a tranquil location with  few museums or galleries, and not one international festival. It earned sudden fame only a few years ago, with the discovery that it is one of the worlds five true blue zones. These are where a large percentage of the population survives beyond the age of ninety. Many ascribe this longevity to the Ikarian diet, rich in olive oil, vegetables, fruit and fish.

The island is also an island of shepherds. Many young people  prefer to remain on the island rather than leave school and head for the cities. They see their educational future as learning to look after their families, crops and animals. The trade they learn is that of a shepherd.
