Stoupa is a small family resort with a long sandy bay lined with tavernas, restaurants and cafes and a small fishing harbour. There is also a smaller sandy bay which is excellent for swimming. Stoupa has a range of shopping facilities, including two supermarkets, a chemist, and a bakery.
Agios Nikolaos is a small, very picturesque fishing village with a harbour and a selection of waterfront tavernas.
Both Agios Nikolaos and Stoupa can be reached by car but both are within easy walking distance of the house, using the coastal footpath.
This is an area of superb coastal and mountain scenery. It is an hour away from Kalamata, the capital town of the region, where there is an airport and also a modern hospital. The new motorway linking Kalamata to Corinth and from there to Athens, is now almost complete, reducing the journey by road from Athens to some two and a half hours. Kalamata airport receives charter flights from many European destinations during the summer, whilst in the winter months there is a domestic service from Athens.
The Peloponnese is one of the last unspoilt regions of Europe. The mountain and coastal scenery is in many places breathtaking. The region is dotted with small villages where life goes on unhurried and unchanging and where the occasional donkey can still be seen.
